July 25,2005 - The BBB recently received two letters that, at a quick glance, look like official notices from the government and our website registrant that require us to send them money. On closer inspection, we determined that they are solicitations to buy products. BBB members are likely getting the same offers.

The first was from Domain Registry of America and advised us that the registration for our website domain name is expiring. At first, we thought it was a renewal notice from our current provider. A closer reading of the offer reveals that the company is trying to get us to switch from our current registrant to them. While the letter has disclaimers to that effect, the Buffalo BBB reports that it has received many complaints from companies or consumers who have felt misled by this company’s solicitations.

The second letter was from Tennessee Labor Law Poster Service. At first glance, it appears to be from a government agency advising us that we need to buy posters to comply with labor laws. A closer reading indicates that this is a private company. The posters in question can be obtained free of charge from the government. We have alerted members to this marketing program before.

If you receive one of these offers, you should make your own decision about buying the product. We recommend, however, that you establish internal accounting controls that insure such letters aren’t treated as invoices and paid unwittingly.
